Conjunction


Conjunction is words or phrases that clarify relatioship between clauses. "Conjoin" means "join together".
Correlative conjunctions are pairs that are used together. Must use structures after conjunction.

Correlative conjunction - inclusive both...And...
Remember that both...and... are correlative conjunction. They are used together to include two parallel structures (two nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs).
Example:
1. Both Mr. John and Mrs. Smith are spoke.
2. The class was interesting and instructive.
"Avoid using as well as instead of both. Avoid using both...and more than two parallel structure"

Correlative conjunction - inclusive both... and...as well as
Remember that correlative conjunction both...and...as well as must be used in sequence to include three parallel structures.
Example:
1. He enjoys both playing soccer and baseball as well as tennis.
2. He is both intelligent and artistic as well as athletic

Correlative conjuntion - inclusive not only...but also
Remember that not only...but also are correlative conjunction, they are used together to include two parallel structures (two nouns, adjective, verb, and adverbs).
Example:
1. One should take not only cash but also traveler's checks.
2. Checks are not only safer but also more convenint.
"Avoid using only not instead not only. Avoid using but instead but also. And avoid using the incorrect pattern."

Correlative conjunction - exclusive not...but
Remember that not...but are correlative conjunction. They are used together to exclude the structures that follows not (noun, adjective, verb, or adverb) and include the structure that follows but.
Example:
1. The largest necessity is not Minnesota but Ohio state.
2. The School color is not blue but red
